Career and Technical Education programs at GPS specialize in educating and preparing students interested in pursuing careers in the fields of Barbering, Cosmetology, HVAC, Early Childhood Education, and Audio/Visual, Graphic Design, & Mass Media.

CTE Goals (AIMS) for 2024-2025

Enhance students' career readiness by integrating advanced industry-specific skills and soft skills training into the existing WBL program, ensuring students are prepared for both immediate employment and long-term career advancement

EIrinn Price made history as the first Garnet-Patterson student to qualify for the National Leadership Skills Conference (NLSC) after winning 1st place in the Barbering competition at the Local CTSO Competition in Washington, D.C., in March 2024.

Congratulations to Pazinam for securing a finalist position in the Prepared Speech category at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) in June.

Congratulations to Troy Lampkin also, for making it to the semi-finals in the Job Interview category at the SkillsUSA competition.

On September 24, 2024, five high school students, and two post-secondary students, accompanied by two advisors from the Barbering and Early Childhood Education program participated in SkillsUSA Advocacy Day. The event aimed to advocate for Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs by engaging with elected officials. A portion of the group met with Lindsey Parker, Chief of Staff to the Mayor, while others met with Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton. The students shared their perspectives on CTE concerns, highlighting the importance of these programs to their education and future careers.

Micro-bacteriology and Microscopes /Spinner- Science

Students learned about microbiology bacteria, viruses, sanitization and sterilization. They also created wet slides, and observed colors and different types of hair

October Highlights: A Month of Learning and Celebration. Our Cosmetology class was filled with enriching experiences and opportunities for growth. Here is a recap of our activities:

Shop Talk and Salon Visit: A New Image by Acia

The month kicked off with an intimate conversation with Dr. Acia Williams, owner of A New Image by Acia Salon, on Salon Ownership. The students then had an inspiring visit to Dr. Williams’ salon. Students had the chance to see a professional stylist at work, gaining valuable insights into the daily operations of a bustling salon. This job shadowing experience allowed our students to see firsthand the application of techniques they have been learning in class, enhancing their understanding of the cosmetology field.

Financial Literacy Workshop

We were fortunate to host Andrea Hunter-Dennis from Hunter Hope Tax Services, who gave our students essential financial information. Andrea’s engaging presentation covered budgeting, saving, and financial planning, all crucial skills for aspiring cosmetologists. Understanding the financial aspects of running a business is vital, and her ability helped equip our students with the knowledge they need for their future careers.

Celebrating October Birthdays

In the spirit of community and camaraderie, we took a moment to celebrate our October birthdays! Students enjoyed delicious treats and shared laughter, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that reflects the supportive environment we foster in our Cosmetology class.

Career Day with Garrison Elementary School Fifth Graders

A special highlight of the month was welcoming fifth graders from Garrison Elementary School. Our students took on the role of mentors, teaching the younger students some basic braiding techniques. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to share their knowledge and skills while inspiring the next generation of aspiring cosmetologists.

As we move forward, we are excited to continue fostering creativity, skill development, and community engagement within our Cosmetology class. Stay tuned for more updates and upcoming events!

ECE 1

This course is the first course in the Early Childhood Education career pathway. The course examines the growth and development of children and the influence of development on effective childcare and early education. Content emphasizes social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development and the application of theories of child development to early care and education. Course work is aligned with the Council for Professional Recognition’s national Child Development Associates competencies.

ECE 2

This course is the second course in the Early Childhood Education career pathway. This course is designed for students who may be interested in working with young children as caregivers or teachers in child development centers, daycare homes, kindergartens, Head Start, pre-schools, or school-age care programs. Coursework is aligned with the Council for Professional Recognition’s national Child Development Associate (CDA) Competencies.
